Poverty Book, Chapters 1-3

2) Comment on this post with three questions you thought of while reading the book. Try to make these questions insightful and interesting, "thick" questions.

1) On page 19 is says that during the Great Depression in the US during the 1930's President Hoover was against giving money to unemployed and impoverished people. What are the advantages or disadvantages of providing temporary help to poor people during times of economic crisis? What is the best way to go about providing it?

  1. 1) It is said that children who live in extreme poverty are more likely to perform hazardous jobs. What are the dangerous jobs that children can work?

    2) Modern poverty exists partly because of the conditions set in motion throughout history and is also fueled by current problems. To solve the problem, will changing the structure of a country be necessary?

    3) With the collapse of the Soviet Union, Eastern Europe countries formerly under Soviet control hoped for democracy and better economies. However, many countries suffered from economic and political conflicts. Does this fact implies that new theory is needed to solve poverty?

  2. The stories that have been mentioned in the book are really sad, and they made me think a lot.
    While a was reading these three questions came to my mind.
    1. What can be done to help a family in extreme poverty in a significantly and long lasting way?
    2. How can the index of poverty of a country be reduced?
    3. If a family live with one dollar per individual daily, What are the three most important things that they should buy to survive?

  3. 1, On page 11, it says that the economic downturn push many people below the poverty line as unemployment goes up and income levels fall. Why the incidental economic crisis causes a lot of people poverty immediately? Except for the people who only can make ends meet, when they have job. If people can live on the budget, be accustomed to saving money regularly, just in case there are some emergencies that need money.
    2, On page 24, it says that the city’s population began to shrink as more and more families moved to the suburbs. Why a lot of families left this city? Does this city still have attractive resource to appeal to some investment?
    3, On page 24, comparing with educated people, illiteracy people truly have little employment opportunities, but living in rural place still has its advantage. Do they ever think about using their land to raise poultry, or run aquaculture industry?

  4. 1) Why the Soviet Union was a very strict regime and they take out their companies from many countries?

    2) What are the reasons or the main causes of a high rate divorce in the economy?

    3) What are the differences between a person who is poor in the USA and a person who is poor in South Africa?

  5. 1) Many superpowers nowadays could attribute their success largely on the earlier industrialization and colonization, and they are still benefiting from transnational transaction and businesses in a similar structure. For those developing countries in poverty, most of them have been emulating the policies and strategies of those superpowers, though is it really a good way to compete with those already-prosperous economies?

    2) The author suggests that, in many occasions, communism or the transition countries left by communism are in poverty, is there any clear correlation between a country's political system and the incidence of poverty in that country?

    3) What's the residual influences of early colonization on today's poverty in the world or in a specific country that has experienced being colonized in the past like Taiwan? Is colonization always detrimental to the colonies in terms of poverty?

  6. 1) According to the passage there are different kinds of poverty. How is the poverty in Africa different to South America´s poverty if the antecedents are very similar?

    2) If the Poor Law from 1601would keep working nowadays, and the children would be allowed to work, in Latin America, How these action would benefit or affect to the economy?

    3)How does the comunism and the democracy affects or promote the poverty? And which one would make a country became bankrupt?

  7. This book made me think a lot about how money is conected with health and welfare, and if is a choise or not.
    1) Does money limit people from happiness?
    We see homeless everyday.
    2) Is poverty an individual fault or government fault?
    3) Do you think that homeless in United States can have a job?

  9. 1)Do you think that get rid of machines (industrialization) will help solve poverty?
    2)Do you think that financing the poor for a short period of time until they rebuilt their economy would solve the poverty in a country?
    3)Do you think that if the US government wouldn't exterminated and isolated the majority of Native North-american Indians, the financial status of these people would be better?

  10. 1.On 20page,it says that industrial revolution created lots of jobs. If industry develops a lot, it can still offer lots of jobs to people?

    2. Chapter1 was about Africa and poor countries' poverty. What does the Government plan for people?

    3.on 28page, it was talking about democracy. If the communism are successful, there is no poverty? What is the reason poverty?

  13. Why the social programs cannot solvent after all the problem of poverty?

    Could be another factors like corruption or someone taking advantage of this situation the main reason of poverty?

    Why if the governments are pretty rich, they can not just create some industries or employ homeless people?
