Hello students! We only have 4 weeks left in the semester. I hope you are enjoying your "fun" reading!
Please comment on this post and answer the following questions by Monday:
1) How far are you in your book (ex: 50%, 80%, page 60 of 150)
2) Have you been using any strategies to improve your comprehension? What strategies have you used? Which strategies have worked the best for you?
3) Have you begun to notice a theme? Write some of your guesses for what you think the theme of the book is. (If you are reading a non-fiction book, instead of theme, tell me what you think the author's bias is)

Poverty Book, Chapters 1-3
1) Read chapters 1-3 in the book "Poverty". Here is a link to the book: http://elc.byu.edu/student/ebooks/books/Poverty.pdf
2) Comment on this post with three questions you thought of while reading the book. Try to make these questions insightful and interesting, "thick" questions.
1) On page 19 is says that during the Great Depression in the US during the 1930's President Hoover was against giving money to unemployed and impoverished people. What are the advantages or disadvantages of providing temporary help to poor people during times of economic crisis? What is the best way to go about providing it?

CIA World Factbook
Hi students! I hope you enjoy this online reading activity.
1) Go to this website: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/index.html. Select a country on the map.\
2) Look through the information and facts presented on the website. Respond with a comment about something interesting or surprising you discovered. You could also include some type of comparison if you want.
3) Choose a second country and repeat step 2.
I looked at two countries: Brasil and Portugal
1) Brasil: I learned a few interesting and surprising things about Brasil that I didn't know before. First, a transnational issue they are facing is a border dispute with Uruguay. Both countries are claiming a small region in the southern part of Brasil. Also, the website stated that Brasil was the second largest consumer of cocaine in the world. The word consumer was what was surprised me the most. It is a stereotype we learn in the US that South American countries produce drugs, not consume them. This could also be due to the fact that Brasil is so large. I wonder what percentage of people in the country actually consume cocaine. My guess is not a lot but I don't know.
2) Portugal: Portugal is one of the smallest countries in the world (111th) and is about the same size as the US state of Indiana. However, it has more coastline the the state of California. While tourism is one of their main industries, it is not one of their top industries. Why is this? Maybe they are trying to keep their beaches pristine and don't feel the need to advertise their beaches.
Hopefully this example helps. I want to see complete sentences and critical thinking!

Hi students!
This semester you need to choose one "fun" book you'd like to read. The goal of this assignment is to help you learn to read for enjoyment in English. We will also have some classes in the middle of the semester that will discuss how to analyze and interpret literature. You will have an assignment with the book you choose (details on the assignment will come at a later time).
Comment on this post with the following:
1) Your name
2) Title and author of book
3) Reason why you chose the book
Remember, if you have trouble finding a book, please ask me (or a friend, a tutor, etc.) for ideas.
